IPHCC signs a new partnership deal with Niagara Health as a step towards Reconciliation
Posted on February 28, 2025

The Indigenous Primary Health Care Council (IPHCC) is proud to announce its partnership with Niagara Health, marking a significant milestone in our efforts to advance Indigenous primary health care in Ontario. This agreement, made official during a traditional signing ceremony on February 27, represents a shared commitment to improving Indigenous health services.
Niagra Health is a regional hospital system which provides a full range of acute care hospital services to the 450,000 residents across the Niagara region.
The focus of this collaboration between IPHCC and Niagara Health will be on developing joint initiatives that address healthcare inequities and improve health outcomes for Indigenous communities. This includes Indigenous-led health programs, integrated care models, and shared knowledge that will strengthen connections between acute, primary, and community-based healthcare services. A key component of this agreement is the commitment to eliminating racism and discrimination in healthcare by embedding cultural safety in every aspect of service.
“We are thrilled to formalize our partnership with IPHCC. Together, we will ensure that Indigenous health priorities are reflected in our practices and that the communities we serve have access to culturally safe, high-quality care,” – Charity Beland, Manager of Indigenous Health Services and Reconciliation at Niagara Health
This agreement is a significant step forward in our collective efforts to improve Indigenous health services and ensure cultural safety across the Niagara region. As part of our ongoing efforts, both IPHCC and Niagara Health are dedicated to providing cultural awareness training for all hospital staff to create a more inclusive and respectful atmosphere for Indigenous patients and their families. This collaboration is built on a foundation of trust, ongoing education, reflection, and progress, with the recognition that optimal health outcomes for Indigenous communities are achieved when care is led by Indigenous peoples, rooted in Indigenous knowledge, and shaped by community-driven priorities.
“This partnership is an important step towards creating a healthcare system that is responsive and respectful of Indigenous needs. It’s about recognizing that Indigenous health challenges are complex, but they can be addressed through collaboration, innovation and listening to the communities we serve. While there is much work ahead of us, this agreement lays the groundwork for transformative change in how we approach healthcare for Indigenous Peoples” says Caroline Lidstone Jones.
“At the IPHCC, our vision is a world where the health and well-being of all Indigenous peoples in Ontario is restored and where health systems provide Indigenous peoples with high quality care, empathy, dignity, and respect. We are honoured that Niagara Health is joining us in helping to advance our vision.”
