Bridging Education and Indigenous Health: Indigenous Primary Healthcare Council and Toronto Metropolitan University Build Partnership

The Indigenous Primary Health Care Council (IPHCC) and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) entered a transformative relationship agreement aimed at eliminating health inequities and disparities for Indigenous Peoples in Ontario. The IPHCC is proud to share that this Relationship Agreement is rooted in Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles, and it aims to leverage education, data and resources to advance Indigenous Health outcomes.
The Agreement seeks to address the negative impact of colonial processes on Indigenous Peoples’ health and wellbeing. It also seeks to create space for Indigenous voices at all governance and decision-making levels in Ontario without prejudice or oppression. As partners, IPHCC and TMU are committed to advancing the resurgence of Indigenous health in Indigenous hands, supporting reconciliation as a step toward healing, and transforming Indigenous health pathways that Indigenous patients can trust.
TMU’s Commitment to Indigenous Health and Wellbeing
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is an independent leader in innovation career-oriented education, and it fosters an urban, culturally diverse, and inclusive learning experience. The university is home tomore than 48,000 students, including 2,900 Master’s and PHD students, 4,000 faculty and staff.
Towards a Culturally Safer and Improved Community Care
IPHCC and TMU are looking forward to harboring culturally safer education and innovation in Indigenous community health. This Relationship Agreement aims leverage the expertise of both organizations to form a framework that supports Indigenous specific health care and education. Through co-creation, both organizations will engage in knowledge exchange within various schools, departments and facultiesat TMU.
Looking Ahead: Enhanced Education rooted in Culturally Safer Practices and Indigenous Health
As partners, IPHCC and TMU have committed to honoring the principles of their Agreement. Both organizations will undergo an evaluation process, celebrate achievements and plan for future success as part of an ongoing effort to advance Indigenous Health.
