Posted on February 5, 2025

The IPHCC is deeply saddened by the passing of Joe Hester and extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the community members whose lives he touched.
Joe was a visionary leader and one of the founding pillars of the Indigenous primary health care sector in Ontario. As Executive Director of Anishnawbe Health Toronto (AHT), he played a pivotal role in establishing and advancing Indigenous-led health care models. His leadership was instrumental in transforming AHT into a beacon of culturally grounded, wholistic care that successfully blends Traditional Indigenous Healing and Western medicine in ways that have been groundbreaking across the health sector.
Joe’s journey with AHT began in 1977, and from its early origins, he worked tirelessly to create safe spaces that honor and center Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Guided by the mantra, “No one will be left behind,” Joe dedicated his life to ensuring that health care services reflected the culture, traditions, and needs of Indigenous Peoples. His success in blending Traditional Indigenous and Western approaches not only advanced AHT but also fostered a resurgence of Indigenous health practices that resonated throughout the Indigenous community in Toronto and beyond.
For over 23 years, Joe’s vision extended to the development of the Indigenous Hub in Toronto’s Canary District – a project that became his life’s work and a testament to his enduring commitment to Indigenous health and wellbeing. Completed in 2024, this four-story building stands as a symbol of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit presence in Toronto. The hub is home not only to AHT but also to Miziwe Biik, an Indigenous employment and training agency, along with housing and retail spaces that foster community growth and resilience.
Joe’s influence extends beyond AHT through his roles as an Advisor to the Toronto Indigenous Health Advisory Circle, the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), and Toronto Public Health. His passion and strategic leadership shaped the landscape of Indigenous health care in Ontario, ensuring that future generations will continue to build on the strong foundations he created.
We acknowledge Anishnawbe Health Toronto for their heartfelt words honoring Joe, and we offer our deepest support to them and all who were touched by his remarkable leadership. We remain committed to continuing Joe’s work and upholding his dedication to the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Peoples across Ontario. His unwavering commitment will inspire generations to come, and his legacy will live on in the continued pursuit of health equity and culturally grounded care for Indigenous communities.
