Murray Sinclair, former senator who led Truth and Reconciliation Commission, passes away at 73

IPHCC is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Murray Sinclair.

Murray Sinclair, former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, passed away surrounded by family on Monday in Winnipeg at age 73.

A member of Peguis First Nation, Justice Sinclair, who was known by his Anishinaabe name Mizhana Gheezhik (the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky) courageously brought attention to the legacy of residential schools, eventually leading Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission from its inception in 2009 to the release of the final report in 2015, which included the 94 Calls to Action.

Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and the second in Canada, Sinclair lived a life dedicated to public service. An Anishinaabe leader in the justice system, his legacy will have a lasting impact felt by Indigenous people.

A sacred fire was lit outside the Manitoba Legislative Building on Monday for members of the public who wished to make offerings of tobacco, pay their respects and to help guide his spirit home.

May his legacy continue to inspire and guide us.
